Here’s something most patients don’t know: “cosmetic dentist” isn’t a recognized dental specialty. Any dentist can call themselves a cosmetic dentist. A prosthodontist, on the other hand, is a recognized specialist with verified advanced training.

Prosthodontists complete three additional years of residency training in the restoration and replacement of teeth, including the aesthetic side. They understand not just how to make teeth look great, but how to make that look last by designing restorations that function properly and hold up to daily use.

What Does a Cosmetic Dentist Do?

In practice, a dentist advertising cosmetic dentistry offers some combination of teeth whitening, dental bonding, porcelain veneers, all-ceramic crowns, and full smile makeovers — treatment chosen mainly to change how a smile looks rather than to fix pain or decay. The list of procedures is the same whoever performs it. What varies is the training behind the treatment planning, the materials chosen, and the handling of the bite that has to keep the result intact.

That distinction matters most in the cases that are both cosmetic and structural at once: teeth worn short by grinding, an old front crown that never matched, a missing front tooth, a bite that has collapsed over the years. Treating those as purely aesthetic problems is how expensive work ends up chipped or remade inside a few years.

How to Compare Credentials

• Look for a recognised specialty. Prosthodontics is one of the ADA-recognised dental specialties; “cosmetic dentistry” is not one of them.
• Ask where the training happened. A three-year, full-time, university-based residency is a different thing from a continuing-education weekend. Dr. Pan trained at UCSF.

• Ask who makes the restoration. Much of our lab work is done in our in-office lab, so the person who designed your smile controls its shade, shape, and finish.
• Ask what happens if you do nothing. A specialist should be able to explain the functional consequence, or tell you honestly that there is not one.
